Cruising with Pets

ree

Cruising with pets can add to your pleasure, but it requires planning to ensure your pet’s comfort and safety.

Allow time to adapt

Gradually introduce your pet to the boating environment by bringing your pet on board while the boat is docked. Allow them to explore and become familiar with their new surroundings. Reward them with positive reinforcement to create a positive association with the boat.

Their special place

Create a comfortable area where your pet feels secure. Consider bring their favourite blanket or a similar item onboard to make them feel at home. The resting area should be protected from the sun and wind.

Nourishment

Pets need to stay hydrated and nourished while underway. Pack enough of their regular food to last the trip. Avoid feeding your pet just before departure to minimise motion sickness.

Entertainment

Pets need stimulation so bring along their favourite toys and engage them in play to keep them active and entertained. If you are in calm waters, consider taking them for a swim. If you are at anchor, a ride in the tender can be fun or a run and play on the beach will allow them to burn off energy.

Sun protection & 1st aid

Provide shade and use pet-safe sunscreen on areas like the nose and ears. The first aid kit on board for human use is normally adequate. To this add:

·       A handbook for basic pet first aid

·       Medications your pet may need

·       Emergency contact details for a veterinarian

Safety

Even if your pet is a strong swimmer, a correctly fitted pet life jacket not only provides buoyancy but also make them easier to spot and retrieve if they fall overboard. Your pet should have a collar with an ID tag. Consider microchipping your pet for added security ashore and ease of passing through quarantine.

Depending on your pet’s temperament, a harness may be needed to keep them from wandering off or jumping overboard. Also consider a safe space in a cabin where your pet can stay during periods of high activity or in rough weather.

Pet overboard

Have a plan in case your pet falls overboard. Discuss this with your Captain before departure or practice your own retrieval techniques. For practicing, a small, weighted fender fitted with your pet’s harness makes a good training aid.
